Telefonica opens up 5G and edge offerings for startups to develop new services

Telefonica has launched a call for proposals for startups to build solutions focused around 5G and edge computing.

The initiative is part of the Wayra Activation Programme - part of Telefonica's global open innovation hub - which allows entrepreneurs free access to its technologies to test their solutions.

Startups selected will be part of the Wayra 5G/Edge Lab, a laboratory in Spain which is set to be launched 'in the coming weeks.' The laboratory will enable them to...

Jeff Ready, CEO, Scale Computing: On the evolution, use cases, and tailwinds of edge

There is a long-standing joke around edge computing and driverless cars. Back in 2019 Mike Fay, then of Dell but now at Amazon Web Services (AWS), told an audience at the IoT Tech Expo event: "If an autonomous car is driving and a deer runs out, you can't send those calculations to the cloud. If you do, you're having venison for dinner."

The need for lower latency to enable the types of computation required for edge use cases has never been more apparent. Jeff Ready,...

Expanding the possibilities of endpoint AI in vision applications

In 2016, truly high accuracy facial recognition on a smartphone was a remarkable innovation but is now close to becoming fully mainstream. While many consumers now see this as a basic smartphone feature, it uses incredibly complex artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with only half of consumers aware of how essential AI is to enabling this feature.

Now we are seeing vision-based AI applications go one step further into even smaller edge and endpoint devices. We are now...
