Nokia and Telia building 5G edge network for Finnish gold mine

Nokia is collaborating with Scandinavian mobile operator Telia, and its partner Digita, to build a 5G standalone (SA) private wireless network at the Agnico Eagle mine in northern Finland.

The Kittilä mine is the largest gold producer in Europe, containing almost 4.9 million ounces of gold in reserves that won’t be depleted until 2032. It sits 90 miles above the Arctic Circle and 550 miles north of Helsinki in the country’s Lapland region.

Silicom Ltd., an Israeli cloud and data centre solutions provider, has won a $30 million (£22.2m) design deal for a custom version of its Edge Smart platform.

Although the client has not been disclosed, it is described as a leading North American telecommunications service provider.

The client was said to be suitably impressed with how Silicom integrated its equipment with one of its partner’s software-based routers to agree to further collaboration.
