Former Viptela execs launch Prosimo to crack app performance from cloud to edge

Meet Prosimo. The name might not be familiar, but its executive team may well be, as the company has come out of stealth with the goal of delivering an 'exemplary' application experience across a unified infrastructure stack.

The company's co-founders, CEO Ramesh Prabagaran and CTO Nehal Bhau, were part of the founding team at Viptela, which was acquired by Cisco for $610 million in 2017.

Prosimo has arrived with $25 million in seed and series A funding. The round was...

Analysing edge computing’s potential for exponential growth – and the Internet of Everything

By 2025, cloud will lead the ICT infrastructure market, with edge computing exponentially growing - according to a new report from Reply.

The IT services provider, in its report 'From Cloud to Edge', looks at the cloud computing market after the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as edge computing and distributed cloud use cases. The report was a showcase of Reply's Trend SONAR, a proprietary data-driven platform.

Similar to when Zach Shelby, CEO of Edge Impulse, was interviewed...

How edge computing will finally make IT and OT get along

Gartner estimates that by 2025, 75% of data will be processed outside the traditional data centre or cloud.

This is clear evidence that manufacturers should be looking to employ edge computing power that offers easy-to-deploy, future-proofed, technology agnostic solutions that can empower them to scale infinitely (no manpower required to install) and save massive amounts of resources in managing and processing big data.

However, many are simply letting their smart...

Bill Gates-backed Pivotal Commware secures $50 million funding for 5G mmWave infrastructure

Pivotal Commware, a Washington-based provider of 5G mmWave infrastructure products, has secured $50 million (£35.8m) in a series C funding round to expand product, distribution, and R&D.

The company - defined as Pivotal but not to be confused with the cloud platform provider of the same name acquired by VMware in 2019 - has offerings aimed at mobile network operators to cost-effectively deploy 5G mmWave networks for mobile and fixed wireless access.

Its product...

Pulsant announces £8 million investment in UK-wide edge computing network

IT infrastructure services provider Pulsant is putting £8 million aside to invest in a new UK national network enabling edge computing.

The project is going ahead through an agreement with communications infrastructure provider Zayo. The investment will see 10 of Pulsant's UK data centres connected via Zayo's fibre network to 'build a unique digital ecosystem', as the two companies trumpeted.

"The investment will create and maintain a high-capacity, low latency and...

Jeff Ready, CEO, Scale Computing: On the evolution, use cases, and tailwinds of edge

There is a long-standing joke around edge computing and driverless cars. Back in 2019 Mike Fay, then of Dell but now at Amazon Web Services (AWS), told an audience at the IoT Tech Expo event: "If an autonomous car is driving and a deer runs out, you can't send those calculations to the cloud. If you do, you're having venison for dinner."

The need for lower latency to enable the types of computation required for edge use cases has never been more apparent. Jeff Ready,...

Verizon and AWS add Seattle and Denver to MEC rollout – and showcases another connected car customer

Verizon and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are launching their mobile edge computing (MEC) platform in Seattle and Denver, bringing the total number of cities deployed to 10.

The move, which snuck in under the radar at the very end of 2020, means Denver and Seattle join Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.

The announcement cited companies with no specific link to the two newly announced cities as customers. These were...
