Jeff Ready, CEO, Scale Computing: On the evolution, use cases, and tailwinds of edge

There is a long-standing joke around edge computing and driverless cars. Back in 2019 Mike Fay, then of Dell but now at Amazon Web Services (AWS), told an audience at the IoT Tech Expo event: "If an autonomous car is driving and a deer runs out, you can't send those calculations to the cloud. If you do, you're having venison for dinner."

The need for lower latency to enable the types of computation required for edge use cases has never been more apparent. Jeff Ready,...

Verizon and AWS add Seattle and Denver to MEC rollout – and showcases another connected car customer

Verizon and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are launching their mobile edge computing (MEC) platform in Seattle and Denver, bringing the total number of cities deployed to 10.

The move, which snuck in under the radar at the very end of 2020, means Denver and Seattle join Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.

The announcement cited companies with no specific link to the two newly announced cities as customers. These were...

Opinion: Bringing colocation closer to the edge

Seamlessly reliable and responsive applications are now expected by consumers and businesses: from video conferencing and content streaming to gaming and software distribution. Furthermore, ultra-low latency in the sub 10ms range, and so well below the current 50 – 150ms of Content Delivery Networks, is seen as essential in delivering future 5G and IoT enabled technologies and applications: from driverless vehicles to remote surgery and automated factories.

Juniper Research: Edge investments by MNOs will reach $8.3B by 2025

Juniper Research predicts investments by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) will exceed $8 billion by 2025.

The analysts expect MNOs on MEC to swell from $2.7 billion in 2020 to around $8.3 billion in 2025.

In tandem with the spending increase, Juniper predicts the number of deployed MEC nodes will increase from 230,000 globally in 2020 to over two million in 2025.

Edge computing has been around in early forms since the late...

Vodafone will begin its European MEC rollout in the UK

Vodafone Business has announced a new service which combines the company’s 5G network with the ultrafast response times of distributed Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) technology.

The company is set to open its first MEC and 5G commercial centre in London in spring 2021. The low latency zone will extend to Cambridge, Oxford, Birmingham, Bristol, and Cardiff, as well as many towns home to tech firms along the M4 motorway corridor and parts of Wales and...

Verizon and Microsoft partner up to accelerate 5G edge computing

Verizon has inked a partnership with Microsoft to help accelerate the deployment of 5G edge applications.

The carrier will integrate Azure edge services into its onsite 5G Edge network to enable ultra-low latency. Verizon and Microsoft’s collaboration aims to open up new possibilities in areas like augmented/virtual reality, computer vision, and digital twins.

“We have built a network that provides real-world, 5G-enabled solutions today,” said Rima Qureshi, EVP and...

AI at the edge: Omdia notes five key factors to consider

One of the most important potential areas for edge computing is the impact on artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge - and a new report from Omdia explores five key areas of growth.

The analyst firm's paper, titled 'Connecting the Dots: AI at the Edge', noted that the Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the main drivers for 'AI-at-the-edge', yet a number of different applications across multiple vertical market also apply.

The report noted five factors that would shape...

Schneider Electric, StorMagic and HPE team up for ‘edge in a box’ data centre

Schneider Electric, alongside partners StorMagic and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), have announced the launch of an 'edge in a box' offering for systems specifically designed for edge computing environments.

The joint solution utilises Schneider Electric's 6U Wall Mount EcoStruxure Micro Data Center, StorMagic's SvSAN software and HPE's ProLiant servers, and can be customised through a global network of channel partners.
