Edge computing in manufacturing: Organisational progress and product updates

For manufacturers, the digitisation and automation of processes, from the factory floor to research and development, is a key step to competitive advantage. Edge computing, as an emerging paradigm, can fit squarely into this Industry 4.0 vision.

But how are manufacturers getting on? A new report from IDC and Lumen Technologies has found more than two thirds (69%) of companies polled were using edge solutions to better acquire, analyse, and act on critical data.

Cloudflare and NVIDIA team up to bring AI to the edge at scale

Cloudflare, the network which holds up a sizeable chunk of the Internet, and GPU and chip giant NVIDIA, have announced a collaboration aimed towards deploying artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge.

The 'AI at the edge' partnership looks to combine the former for NVIDIA and the latter for Cloudflare. The result will be a 'massive platform on which developers can deploy applications that use pre-trained or custom machine learning models in seconds.'

How Edge Impulse is looking to empower developers with embedded machine learning

Zach Shelby has spent most of the last decade and a half on the front line of the Internet of Things (IoT). His company Sensinode, which was acquired by Arm in 2013, provided enterprise wireless sensor networks to system integrators and product providers. Shelby did lots of interesting work on embedded systems, and incorporating standards such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). But he wanted to go a step further.

Enter Edge Impulse. The company, with Shelby as co-founder and CEO -...

Expanding the possibilities of endpoint AI in vision applications

In 2016, truly high accuracy facial recognition on a smartphone was a remarkable innovation but is now close to becoming fully mainstream. While many consumers now see this as a basic smartphone feature, it uses incredibly complex artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with only half of consumers aware of how essential AI is to enabling this feature.

Now we are seeing vision-based AI applications go one step further into even smaller edge and endpoint devices. We are now...
